Homes for Nature is a voluntary initiative developed by the Future Homes Hub On-Site Nature Measures Working Group and is additional to the Biodiversity Net Gain regulations.
The Homes for Nature commitment will see a bird-nesting brick or box installed for every new home built, as well as hedgehog highways as standard on every new development taken through planning from 1st September 2024 for participating companies.
Homes for Nature aims to support biodiversity gains through creating space for wildlife. In its early years, its primary goal is to provide for hedgehogs and swifts, two species which we know are in decline in the UK and which need support. However, it is anticipated that by installing universal integrated nest bricks, the project can help other cavity-nesting, red-listed bird species.
The scheme came into effect in September 2024 for all new planning applications. The initiative will run until at least 2030, with annual reporting to track progress and to identify further suitable measures that could be introduced to support other wildlife.
The commitment now integrates nature positive approach for new apartments and high-rise buildings.
