Heat pumps: hints & tips for site managers

Published on 3 March 2026

With heat pumps set to become the primary heating solution in new homes from 2027, on-site sequencing and coordination are critical. Many early delivery issues have stemmed not from the technology itself, but from small installation details that were difficult to correct later.

Published as part of the Future Homes Standard Essentials series, Hints & Tips for Site Managers has been developed with developers, installers and assessors through the Future Homes Hub’s Heat Pump Implementation Group.

What’s in the guide:

  • A four-stage checklist: groundworks, first fix, second fix and commissioning
  • Prompts on routing, clearances, access and insulation continuity
  • Reminders on photographic evidence for compliance and warranty sign-off
  • QR codes linking to practical examples and further resources

We have created two formats to access the site managers guide in a way that suits your workflow

1. A printable A3 PDF checklist: Designed to be printed and used on site, this resource provides a practical, visual A3 checklist to support right-first-time heat pump installation on live building sites.

2. A mobile-friendly online checklist: Designed to be used as a prompt while walking around site (where your internal processes allow use of mobiles). This online version provides additional contextual guidance and illustrations to check good practice.
